Jack Baarends

Jack F. J. Baarends has more than 41 years of experience in polymer (resin, varnish, compound) technology and in the graphic arts industry. He worked for Hexion Specialty Chemicals (before known as Lawter International, Eastman and Resolution Specialty Materials) and for Akzo Nobel Inks.

His expertise includes formulating and developing all kind of resins, varnishes and printing ink, and testing the inks on printing press with emphasis on the end-user application and performance requirements. His expertise is in all kind of printing inks and printing techniques, such as Offset, Gravure and Flexography.

Mr. Baarends travelled all over the world in all his jobs to advise ink manufacturers (from global giants to small locals) how to improve the quality of their inks, how to solve their problems and to assist in new developments. He lived 3 years in USA as Senior VP of Global Technology and has been responsible for Asia for over 25 years. Recently he developed the most “green” Offset ink in the world for a local Chinese company.

Mr. Baarends has authored many papers on inks and ink raw materials and wrote many articles for trade magazines. He has also given seminars all over the world to corporations, universities, printing ink clubs and during conferences and exhibitions. He chaired various seminars and is member of the Printing Ink Committee of the European Coatings Show, which takes place every 2 years in Nuremberg, Germany. Currently, Mr. Baarends is doing some consultancy and enjoys his free time after he retired in January 2010. Mr. Baarends has a degree in organic chemistry and in process chemistry.
