We all are formulating with raw materials and quite often we have a choice in different raw materials and their suppliers! When asking the market place on the key drivers by which they select raw materials the following trends were observed.

Seems that the paint companies spend much time and effort to convince everyone that the raw materials are commodities!
It is encouraging that the highest rating is still performance. Who was in the audience you surveyed?

intrinsic performance, i.e. the nature of a product type's performance. That is if you needed epoxy type performance you would not select a PVA, as the PVA does not have the intrinsic properties needed. Once you subtract that out of the survey and look closely at the sub-segment, availability & material reliability become the key issues, with cost coming into a close 3rd.
