Green solvents remain solvents from a VOC perspective but they can bring HS&E benefits

SpecialChem - Jul 6, 2010

Everyone in the world is looking for greener, bio-based or sustainable chemistries to replace petro-chemical based products. In trying to reduce the environmental impact of coatings, the industry has really focused on eliminating VOC and HAPS from the coating formulation. However when looking at the longevity of the product life cycle of solvents, we are still far from a dead product. In lot’s of applications the only solution is still to work with solvent containing systems. The interesting challenge in front of us is to make use of the most sustainable solutions possible and this is why we asked for your feedback on what you consider the most critical product attribute that, when improved on, could significantly enhance the sustainability of the solvent of choice.

Complete Lifecycle VOC Perspective - Jul 08, 2010
posted by James Opre, Corporate Management at Vertec BioSolvents, Inc.
The survey responses and your comments are right on: Green, biobased solvents offer multiple environmental, health & safety and sustainability advantages. However, the narrowly defined Federal and state VOC regulations are a major, disproportionate obstacle to broader use of biobased solvents, which can also offer performance advantages to coatings formulators. What is needed is a more comprehensive consideration of net VOC content, that credits the biobased solvents for the carbon removed from the atmosphere during the growth cycle of the plants from which they are derived. This appproach would provide a more complete picture of the true VOC impact of a given material and allow the many other benefits of biobased solvents to be realized.
