Main Factors Affecting the Coating's IR Reflectivity

The performance of a coating depends upon the properties of its components including the pigments, binder, and additives. Pigments are selected for their appearance and protective properties. The use of infrared (IR) reflective pigments in coatings reduces the temperature of the coating and substrate by lowering the energy absorption from the sunlight. 	September, 2012 - Soya Oil Voted as the Best Renewable Raw Material for Sustainable Coatings Conventional solvent borne alkyds have been known for their desirable coating properties for decades. These properties include high gloss, long open time, smooth flow, and excellent leveling. Newer low VOC resin technologies, such as acrylics, cannot match these alkyd coating properties. Although initial attempts to develop low VOC alkyd coatings were unsuccessful, recent advances in surfactant technology now make it possible to develop alkyd coatings that meet low VOC requirements. In July, we asked our members the following question: Which of the following vegetable oils do you believe has the best chance of being used as a renewable raw material for commercial sustainable coatings?

	August, 2012 - Silica Preferred Over Other Matting Agents to Enhance Matte Effect in Paints The gloss of paint is dependent upon the angle and intensity of incident light and reflected light from the dried paint surface. A roughened surface reduces the gloss by scattering the reflected light impinging upon the film surface thus creating a matte effect. A variety of matting agents are available that reduce the smoothness of the film surface. Other factors that may reduce the gloss of paint films include surface defects created by rapid film drying or improper spray application methods. In July, we asked our members to identify the matting agents they use to reduce the gloss of paint. The question we asked is: What do you do for enhancing "matte effect" in paints?

	July, 2012 - Surface Effects in Coatings Believed to Benefit Most from Nanomaterials Nanotechnology is rapidly gaining recognition as having the potential to provide significant benefits for the coatings industry. The most publicized benefits include scratch resistance, UV protection and weathering protection. Nanoscale materials can be used in solvent and water-based coatings as well as UV coatings and powder coatings. Sales of nanocoatings have been projected to exceed USD 11 bn by 2016. In June, we asked our members to share their experience with nanotechnology. The question we asked was: Which of the following performances do you think will truly benefit from nano-resins & nano-additives?

	June, 2012 - Bio-based Raw Materials Form the Main Focus in Developing Bio-based Coatings Coating companies are constantly looking for novel ways to develop sustainable coatings that have a minimum impact on the environment. Some of the approaches industry has been using over the years to develop sustainable coatings include: Reduce energy consumption; Reduce waste material; Reduce water consumption; Reduce VOCs. Recent advances in using bio-based materials to replace petroleum-based materials now offer a newer option for coating manufacturers to develop sustainable coatings. In April, we asked our members to share their interest in replacing petroleum based materials with bio-based materials. The question we asked was: What is your main focus in developing bio-based coatings?

	May, 2012 - Optimizing TiO₂ Picked as the Main Cost Reduction Strategy While Formulating Sustainable Coatings One of the major objectives in developing novel coatings, especially sustainable coatings, is to control cost. In March, we invited our members to share their approach regarding cost control of sustainable coatings. The question we asked is: What is the main cost reduction strategy you pursue in formulation? TiO₂ accounts for approximately 50% of the raw material cost for a flat finish paint and almost 40% of the raw material cost for semi-gloss and high gloss paints. The cost of TiO₂ has been constantly rising during the last few years and is currently approaching close to USD 2.00 per pound.

	April, 2012 - Low VOC Water-based Coatings Offer the Most Economical Option in Developing Sustainable Products The United Nations issued the Brundtland Report in the 1980s that defined sustainable development as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." For our March question, in order to gain some insights as to how our readers are developing sustainable coatings, we asked the following question: Paint and coating manufacturers are competing to develop sustainable products that fulfill government and market performance requirements. Which of the following technologies do you believe is best able to provide sustainable products at the lowest overall manufacturing and application costs?

	March, 2012 - R&D Labs Mostly Develop Products Based on Requests from Companies' Marketing Department Chemical companies are constantly under pressure to optimize the use of in-house resources to maintain their competitiveness in the world economy. Companies typically allocate resources to carry out routine activities such as, solving customer service problems, reducing waste, and reducing manufacturing costs.
