Main Factors Affecting the Coating's IR Reflectivity

The performance of a coating depends upon the properties of its components including the pigments, binder, and additives. Pigments are selected for their appearance and protective properties. The use of infrared (IR) reflective pigments in coatings reduces the temperature of the coating and substrate by lowering the energy absorption from the sunlight. 	February, 2012 - Overcoming Resin Properties Polled as the Main Challenge in Developing Low VOC Coatings Resin systems typically used in solvent-based coatings are incompatible with water due to the high surface tension (72 dyne/cm) of water. Therefore, replacing solvent-based coatings with low VOC water-based coatings presents a challenge to coating formulators to overcome the water incompatibility problem. To meet this challenge water-based coatings are more complex than corresponding solvent-based coatings. In order to get some insight into the major difficulties coating formulators are facing to develop low VOC coatings, SpecialChem asked its members in January: Which of the following is the biggest challenge to overcome when developing a low VOC coating?

	January, 2012 - Lack of Economic Viability Limits the Use of Nanoparticles for Enhancing Weatherability of Coatings Conventional UV absorbers do not offer long-term coating protection as they degrade over time from sunlight and lose their efficiency. Despite the widespread interest in nanotechnology and the limited weathering protection, conventional organic UV light absorbing materials still dominate the market used to protect coatings from outdoor exposure to UV light. In order to gain some insight into why nanotechnology has not significantly replaced conventional UV light stabilizers, SpecialChem asked its members in November the following question: What do you see as the major obstacle in using nanoparticles to enhance the weatherability of coatings?

	December, 2011 - Inorganic Particles Preferred Over Other Additives for Providing Abrasion Resistance to Coatings In order to stay competitive in today's coating market; coating manufacturers are putting an emphasis on developing sustainable coatings. One of the strategies companies use to develop sustainable coatings is to develop durable coatings that provide long lasting wear properties such as abrasion resistance. In November, SpecialChem asked its members to Click'N'Vote for the following question: Which of the following additives do you find provides the best abrasion resistance for coatings without sacrificing other important coating properties?

	November, 2011 - Self-repairing Properties Most Sought After While Developing SMART Coatings Multifunctional coatings that provide long-lasting surface protection in combination with an additional function are gaining much interest. These new innovative coatings are typically referred to as smart coatings. Smart coatings that incorporate an added function, such as self-repairing or water repellency, have a built-in mechanism to automatically initiate the added function without external intervention.

	October, 2011 - Improved Performance Chosen as the Foremost Reason for Reformulation Efforts The ability to maintain a competitive position in the coatings and ink marketplace requires an in-house program committed to improving product performance and controlling manufacturing costs. 	September, 2011 - R&D Chemists Choose Suppliers that Provide Resin/Additive Technical Solutions Optimal coating performance typically depends upon incorporating the most effective coating additive(s) in the formulation. In order get the appropriate additive(s), R&D chemists can choose between suppliers that specialize in additives or resin suppliers that provide a resin/additive package. 	August, 2011 - Manufacturers Rely on Chemical Suppliers & Internet for Information while Developing Coatings Paint and coating manufacturers are constantly challenged to improve existing product performance and/or develop innovative products to stay ahead of their competitors---at the same time, meeting stricter government environment and health related regulations.
