February 2010: Do you think that powder coatings can outperform liquid coatings?

Environmental advantages, coatings production maximized, good applied coatings performance etc. have led the way for the conversion of liquid coatings to powder coatings. Do you think that powder coatings can outperform liquid coatings?

As the name itself implies 100% powder pigmented resin . it has advantages fast process,
required less space, application method is simple, recovery is 100% only colour change make this process limitation.cost factor is more as compared to liquid coatings.wrap around effect is possible.
Powder vs. Liquid Coatings - Feb 04, 2010

Having been a powder coating formulating/ testing chemist for over thirty years, and having tested hundreds of powders versus comparable liquid coatings, the only conclusion that may be drawn is that each has its own advantages, depending upon the end-use. Generally, powder coatings afford more abrasion resistance because of increased film thickness and liquids offer more flexibility because of lower applied film thicknesses. Proper resin selection and formulating abilities of the chemists often determine the difference in performance.
Powder V/s Liquid coatings - Feb 10, 2010

Being in the industry for more than 15 years , tried many different systems. I believe that both the technologies have their own adavantages and disadavntages.
Certain applications like heavy engineering parts/metals you can not use powders due to the heating cost and you have to use liquid paints.

Appliances industry -Powder out performs liquid in terms of productivity.

I have worked around 4 years in the area, and personally, powder coatings give more advantages than liquid coatings. Better adhesion, much shorter cure time and handling time, less waste, greater production rates, more environmentally friendly for not using solvents, among others, give powder coatings excellent characteristics to be chosen from liquid coatings. In the case of FBE, the electro-deposition is another advantage during application. Nevertheless, in some cases, powder coatings application could be very tricky and expensive and require some equipment to guarantee an optimum protection, e.g. pipe joints, coating maintenance on field, big structures such as tanks.

My experience in powder coating and liquid coating is limited.
Each has its own advantages and limitations.
Powder coating has the better futre, thanks to nano tecnology. Nanoscale materials for powder coating applications are now available for commercial use. These nano products can be appiled in thin layer which reduces cost and at the same time maintance the performace as well.
I love Powder, but... - Feb 17, 2010

Not at the time. In many industrial sectors, is done (aluminum profile, metal furniture, appliances etc...), but for to have the correct level and, don't forget the appropriate productivity, eg can and coil, wood, metallic finishes... to work harder is needed, develop not only engineering of product also need evolution the production process and application.

I Agree with previous comments; each technology has its own advantages. Powder coatings already demonstrated their capabilities in Industrial applications like Home appliances and metal profiles outperforming liquid coatings and getting their market share. There are other industrial markets like Can & Coil or Automotive where liquid coatings have still better performances.
Liquids are hanging on. - Feb 23, 2010

Based on performance properties alone, I do not believe powder can out perform liquids when applied at the same thickness. Powder may be more eco friendly, but there are w/b urethanes out that rival if not exceed powder performance with little to no voc or haps.
Powder v Liquid Performance - Feb 25, 2010
posted by Andrew Cockcroft, Consulting/ Training/ Education at COCKCROFT
Powder outperforms liquid in most of its applications but not in all and needs more investment in technology development to continue its successful growth. Powder is limited by its need for high temperature cure, poorer performance than liquid at 25 microns and lower and application difficulties in to recesses. Further technology advances in formulation and application processes are key to growth.
Price Vs Performance - Feb 25, 2010

Powder coating definately out perform liquid coating. But price Performance vise liquid coating out perform powder coating.
To manufacture powder coating require highly capital intensive set up, & even to
apply powder coating require capital intensive set up.
So price performance wise liquid coating is winner & remain, only environment concern like VOC & law will push any one to go for powder coating, where government intervention is not there liquid coating is preferential method.
