Octa-Soligen 123 aqua Cobalt, barium and zinc salts of 2-ethylhexanic acid (octoates) or their isomers Bayer-Börchers Drier / Siccative >> Combination drier Alkyd Resins Coatings >> Waterborne Octa-Soligen® 123 aqua 14 Speciality drier for water-borne paint systems Description Octa-Soligen® 123 aqua is a hydrophilic combination drier manufactured by special means. The active metal ingredients are cobalt, barium and zinc. This drier is usable in all water-borne paint systems based on binders which dry by oxidation. Properties This specially activated drier effects rapid and uniform initial drying and good through-drying of the paint film as well as improving colour stability, gloss, film hardness and water resistance. lt remains stable even if stored for over a year. Cobalt effects rapid surface drying. In conjunction with cobalt, barium and zinc act like lead and improve through-drying. At the same time they prevent the adsorption of primary driers, thereby increasing drier stability during long-term storage. In contrast to conventional driers, Octa-Soligen® 123 aqua is simple to use. It can be added to the binder or to paint already diluted with water, regardless of pH. A 24-hour maturing period allows Octa-Soligen® 123 aqua to take full effect. Applications The combination drier Octa-Soligen® 123 aqua is usable in all water-borne paint systems based on binders which dry by oxidation. Mixing and addition rate Addition rates range from 2 to 6% Octa-Soligen® 123 aqua relative to binder (long-oil alkyd), equivalent to the following metal contents: cobalt 0.024 - 0.072% barium 0.144 - 0.432% zinc 0.064 - 0.192% Under certain circumstances, more or less than the recommended addition rates may be used. The optimum rate needs to be determined in trials, however. To improve the drier stability of paints such as those containing pigments which readily adsorb driers, we recommend that 0.5 - 1% Octa-Soligen® Calcium 10 is added prior to milling.
