Octa-Soligen Bismuth 24 Bismuth salt of 2-ethylhexanic acid (octoates) or isomer Bayer-Börchers Drier / Siccative Alkyd Resins Octa-Soligen® Bismuth 14 Description Bismuth is a drier metal which is used as a substitute for lead. It has a strong activating effect on cobalt and improves the through-drying properties and drying in unfavorable weather conditions. Bismuth is also used to improve the hardness of baking coatings. Properties Octa-Soligen® Bismuth 24 has very similar properties to lead. When combined with cobalt, it significantly improves drying properties - especially in applications in extreme weather conditions, e.g. high atmospheric humidity. Applications When combined with cobalt, Octa-Soligen® Bismuth 24 improves the drying properties of conventional alkyd coatings which dry by oxidation. Addition In our experience, the percentage addition of bismuth, calculated on the metal content per binder (solid), is approx. 0.1 - 1.0 % Bi. The exact amount required depends on the binder used.
