Cymel 1123 Methylated ethylated benzoguanamine Cytec Crosslinking / Coupling / Curing Agents >> Amine Acrylic/Acrylate Resins Alkyd Resins Epoxy Resins Polyester Coatings >> Electrodeposition Coatings >> Solventborne Coatings >> Waterborne Coil Coating General Industrial /Maintenance CYMEL 1123 resin is a methylated, ethylated benzoguanamine resin developed primarily for use as a crosslinking agent in electrocoating and conventional coatings requiring high detergent and chemical resistance. CYMEL 1123 resin also imparts excellent salt spray resistance to a variety of coating systems. It is a very efficient crosslinking agent for polymers containing carboxyl, hydroxyl or amide groups such as epoxy, alkyd and acrylic resins. In certain polyester coil coating systems, CYMEL 1123 resin has provided hardness, elasticity and chemical resistance superior to comparable melamine crosslinked systems. In non-electrocoating applications a strong acid catalyst such as CYCAT®4040, CYCAT 500 or CYCAT 600 catalyst, should be used with CYMEL 1123 resin containing finishes. Even though CYMEL 1123 resin is not water soluble, it may be incorporated in water reducible finishes by first blending it with the anionic backbone resin before reduction with water. After amine neutralization, the resin blend will be water reducible and provide clear vehicle systems. ADVANTAGES High solids Excellent chemical resistance Excellent detergent resistance Excellent salt spray resistance Low free formaldehyde APPLICATION AREAS Electrocoating systems Coil coating systems Water based coatings Conventional solvent systems Metal decorating enamels ELECTROCOATING SYSTEMS CYMEL 1123 resin has excellent co-deposition efficiency in electrocoating baths. In general, about 100% of the crosslinking agent present in the bath will migrate to the electrode. This effect has been observed with maleinized oil, acrylic, polyester and epoxy ester vehicles. A. WHITE DETERGENT RESISTANT ELECTROCOAT TOP-COAT The XC-4005 resin (1) is blended with the CYMEL 1123 resin (2) and diisopropanol amine (3) is added slowly with stirring. The pigment (4) is then added and the resulting paste is ground on a Cowles disperser for 20- 30 minutes followed by the slow addition of deionized water (5) under high speed agitation. The neutralized catalyst, (6) and (7), can then be added directly to the concentrate. The resulting 43% solids paint can then be diluted to 10% solids with deionized water. B. RED OXIDE PRIMER BATH AND ELECTRODEPOSITION PROPERTIES Formulation B applied to Bonderite 37, Bonderite EP-2 and Bonderite 1000 treated cold rolled steel substrates, with and without chromic acid rinse, shows 0.5 mm or less creepage after 240 hours salt spray exposure. The XC-4005 resin (1) is blended with CYMEL 1123 resin (2), diisopropanol amine (3) and the pigments (4 & 5). To this blend the deionized water (6) is added under high speed agitation. The resulting paste is ground in a ball mill for 24 hours. The ground mixture is let down with the blend of XC-4005 resin (7) and diisopropanol amine (8). The 50 concentrate is diluted to the final bath concentration of 10%. 2 Product of Cytec Industries Inc. 3 Product of Chas. Pfizer & Company, Minerals, Pigments, Metals Division 4 Product of N.L. Add items (4) and (5) and mix until uniform, using high speed agitation. Add mill base and remix until uniform. Finally, add item (8) slowly while continuing to mix using slow speed agitation. D. DETERGENT RESISTANT POLYESTER FINISH Formulation D sprayed on phosphate treated steel panels and baked at 180°C for 17 minutes, passes 144 hours detergent resistance (ASTM D-2248) without blistering or loss of gloss.
