ADVANTAGES High solids Exempt solvent Wide compatibility Stability Improved adhesion Improved overbake frilling resistance Improved flexibility Improved salt-spray resistance APPLICATION AREAS Water-reducible finishes High solids coatings Coil-coating enamels Metal decorating finishes Corrosion resistant finishes Printing inks CYMEL 1171 resin represents a new class of high performance amino crosslinking agents and is a companion product of CYMEL 1170 butylated glycouril resin. Its performance characteristics are superior to existing melamine and benzoguanamine resins. Like CYMEL 1170 resin, CYMEL 1171 resin provides cross-linked films with outstanding adhesion even when exposed to conditions of high humidity, steam, dry heat or the weather. This improved adhesion provides increased corrosion resistance and flexibility. CYMEL 1171 resin is reactive with hydroxyl, carboxyl and amide groups and is compatible with most water and organo-soluble acrylic, alkyd, polyester, epoxy, epoxy ester and vinyl polymers. CYMEL 1171 resin requires strong acid catalysis for optimum cure response. A level of about 0.2-0.4% of p-toluene sulfonic acid or 0.5-1.0% 4040 Catalyst 2 based on total binder is required for optimum cure. In aqueous systems, the reactivity of CYMEL 1171 resin is very much dependent on the pH of the system. A pH of 2 or below is recommended for fast and optimum cure at standard baking conditions (150-175°C for 20 minutes). CYMEL 1171 resin has a very low tendency to selfcondense. Optimum levels of CYMEL 1171 resin can be calculated using the equivalent weight of 100-140 for CYMEL 1171 resin. For best results, ladder studies should be made. Exterior exposure studies show that CYMEL 1171 resin crosslinked water-reducible acrylics and solvent borne polyester coatings provide durability as good as or better than melamine crosslinked systems. CYMEL 1171 resin is highly stable in aqueous systems using primary, secondary or tertiary amines or ammonia as the stabilizer. It is an ideal crosslinking agent for ammonia neutralized emulsion systems using amine blocked acid catalyst. CYMEL 1171 resin is completely soluble in water, most alcohols, aromatic hydrocarbons, glycols, glycolether, ketones and nitriles. CYMEL 1171 resin is partially soluble in esters and nitro solvents and is insoluble in aliphatic and chlorinated solvents. 2 A product of Cytec Industries Inc.
