Cymel 325 Methylated melamine-formaldehyde resin Cytec Amino Resins >> Urea based (incl. UF) Coatings >> Solvent-Free/ High-Solids Coatings >> Waterborne Automotive OEM Automotive refinishing Coil Coating Isobutanol Soluble in most alcohols, esters, ketones, chlorinated solvents and glycol ethers Slightly soluble in water and aromatic solvents Insoluble in aliphatic solvents CYMEL 325 resin is a new type of highly methylated melamine-formaldehyde resin which does not require strong acid catalyst for fast cure response. CYMEL 325 resin is reactive with hydroxyl amide and carboxyl group containing polymers. The weight loss of CYMEL 325 resin during the baking process is significantly less than that of partially methylated melamine-formaldehyde resins. The baking volatiles from CYMEL 325 resin contain very low levels of formaldehyde. The lower weight loss of CYMEL 325 resin crosslinked coatings also results in less tendency to blister at higher film thickness. CYMEL 325 resin requires only weak acid catalysis for cure; a low acid number in the backbone resin is suffi-cient. The cure reaction additionally can be catalyzed with weak organic acids or inorganic acids such as maleic, citric, phosphoric or alkyl phosphoric acids, low levels of p-toluene sulfonic acid or CYCAT ®1 4040 catalyst. CYMEL 325 resin will self-condense like a partially methylated resin. Higher film hardness may, therefore, be obtained by raising the level of amino crosslinking agent. The high reaction rate of CYMEL 325 resin at lower temperature reduces the chance of evaporation of low molecular weight resin components. CYMEL 325 resin should, therefore, be very suitable for applications where “smoking” of the baking exhaust is a problem. Compared to partially methylated melamine-formalde-hyde resins, CYMEL 325 resin has shown, in some water-reducible coatings, improved humidity and salt-spray resistance. Fast cure response Reduced weight loss Low free-formaldehyde Less blistering No strong acid catalyst required No smoking Higher resistance properties Automotive enamels General purpose enamels Coil coating High solids coatings Water-borne coatings CYMEL 325 resin has good compatibility with most film formers including short and medium oil alkyd resins, polyester resins, acrylics, epoxies and cellulosics. CYMEL 325 resin has excellent compatibility in water-reducible acrylic and polyester systems. Low free-formaldehyde, highly methylated melamine-formaldehyde resin. Used for high solids and water-borne coatings, automotive enamels, general purpose enamels and coil coating. Provides fast cure response, improved humidity and salt-spray resistance, reduced weight loss, low blistering and high resistance properties. Does not require strong acid catalyst. Gives compatibility with most film formers including short and medium oil alkyd resins, polyester resins, acrylics, epoxies and cellulosics, and with water-reducible acrylic and polyester systems.
