Cymel UM-15 Methoxymethyl urea Cytec Crosslinking / Coupling / Curing Agents >> Amine Acrylic/Acrylate Resins Alkyd Resins Cellulosic Resins Epoxy Resins Polyester Coatings >> Solventborne Coatings >> Waterborne Wood & Furniture Coatings In solvent borne systems CYMEL UM-15 resin is a methylated urea-formaldehyde crosslinking agent with a medium to high degree of alkylation, a medium methylol content and low imino functionality. CYMEL UM-15 resin is a very effective crosslinking agent for backbone polymers containing hydroxyl, carboxyl or amide functional groups such as alkyd/polyester or acrylic resins. CYMEL UM-15 resin is suitable in high solids, fast low temperature curing systems, like wood and paper coatings, providing very good film hardness/adhesion relationship, very good stackability properties and paint stability. In water borne systems CYMEL UM-15 resin is completely water soluble, and has a very good compatibility with water soluble anionic backbone polymers. This makes CYMEL UM-15 resin suitable for water borne applications, like paper and wood coatings, where speed of cure is very important. Catalysis CYMEL UM-15 resin responds best to strong acid catalysts, like CYCAT® 4040 catalyst. Generally 0.5 to 1.0% catalyst solution on total binder solids is sufficient to provide good cure at baking scheddules of 15 minutes at 120°C or 5 minutes at 150°C. Stability Formulated systems containing CYMEL UM-15 resin have to be stabilised with primary alcohols, amines or with a combination of these. Acid curing systems are usually stabilised only by addition of adequate amounts of primary alcohols. For water borne systems a pH value between 7.0-8.5 should be maintained to achieve stability. SOLUBILITY Alcohols Complete Ketones Partial Esters Partial Aromatic hydrocarbons Partial Aliphatic hydrocarbons Not dilutable Water Partial COMPATIBILITY Alkyd resins Very good Polyester resins Good Acrylic resins Good Nitrocellulose Very good Cellulose acetate butyrate Very good Polyvinyl butyral Very good FDA acceptance for food-contact use as directed in the following section of the Code of Federal Regulations: 21 CFR 175.300 (Resinous and polymeric coatings).
