Elvanol 71-30 Polyvinyl alcohol DuPont Vinyl >> Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVOH) Architectural / Decorative >> Flooring Other industry >> Paper coatings Soluble in water, hot Insoluble in water, cold Insoluble in organic solvents DuPont Elvanol® polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH, sometimes also referred to as PVA) is a water-soluble synthetic polymer with excellent film-forming, emulsifying, and adhesive properties. This versatile polymer offers outstanding resistance to oil, grease and solvents, plus high tensile strength, flexibility, and high oxygen barrier. DuPont markets three types of Elvanol®: fully hydrolyzed, partially hydrolyzed, and copolymers. All are made by alcoholysis of polyvinyl acetate (PVAc). The fully hydrolyzed grades contain few, if any, residual acetate groups; while partially hydrolyzed grades retain some of the residual acetate groups. The partially hydrolyzed grades dissolve in water at room temperature; fully hydrolyzed grades dissolve in hot (200 degree F) water, and remain in solution when cooled to room temperature. Elvanol® 71-30 is a medium viscosity, fully hydrolyzed grade of polyvinyl alcohol. White and granular, it is soluble in hot water but insoluble in cold water and common organic solvents. For many applications Elvanol® 71-30 is prepared in water solutions. On evaporation of water, transparent films are formed which have high tensile strength and tear resistance. The binder characteristics of Elvanol® offer excellent adhesion to porous, water-absorbent surfaces. Paper and Paperboard Sizing and Coatings as grease-proof coating or release coating on paper specialties; and as binder in pigmented coatings to provide greater opacity: due to improved optical properties, part of the TiO2 may be substituted by a lower cost pigment such as clay. Building Products Because Elvanol® 71-30 is an effective binder for solid particles such as pigments, ceramics, cements and plastics, it finds utility in building products. It is used as a binder in ceiling tile, floor coatings and particle board. Medium viscosity, fully hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohol. Used as a binder in pigmented coatings and as a binder for solid particles such as pigments, ceramics, cements and plastics in floor coatings. Gives high tensile strength and tear resistance, very good adhesion to porous, water-absorbent surfaces. Offers very good film-forming, emulsifying, and adhesive properties., outstanding resistance to oil, grease and solvents, high tensile strength, flexibility, and high oxygen barrier.
