Disperse-ayd 8 Modified alkyd Elementis Acrylic/Acrylate Resins Alkyd Resins Cellulosic Resins Chlorinated Rubber Epoxy Resins Polyester Coatings >> Solventborne Mineral spirit Disperse-Ayd 6 and 8 are combination wetting, dispersing and deflocculating agents for use with carbon black pigments in solventborne coatings. The dispersion of carbon black pigment is sufficiently complex that it is often not possible for a single material to function satisfactorily as both dispersion additive and complete dispersing vehicle. Compatibility and effectiveness Disperse-Ayd 6 and 8 are fully compatible with many non-aqueous vehicles, including medium- and long-oil alkyds, vinyl toluene alkyds, styrenated alkyds, epoxy ester, oil- and alkyd- modified urethanes, raw and bodied oils, short-oil alkyds, epoxies, chlorinated rubber, nitrocellulose and acrylics. The recommended level of use for Disperse-Ayd 6 is 2% to 3% added to the mill base to improve dispersion characteristics of most non-aqueous vehicles. Potential benefits include lower viscosity, higher pigment loading, improved fineness of grind, reduced grinding time, maximum jetness of masstone blacks and reduced floating and flooding with tinting blacks. Disperse-Ayd 8 is best used as the sole grinding vehicle in highly concentrated mill bases to provide maximum dispersion efficiency, stability and compatibility. These mill bases can either be let down directly into finished paints or used as stable, non-flaking tinting pastes. Disperse-Ayd 8 can also be used to replace 5-10% of the vehicle in the mill base portion of the formula for results similar to those of Disperse-Ayd 6. Grind in steel ball mill and let down as desired. Formulation Notes Carbon black mill bases formulated with Disperse-Ayd 8 will have good grinding characteristics at much lower vehicle solids and higher pigment concentrations than can be achieved with conventional vehicles. In tinting black dispersions it is possible to pack 50% more pigment at 40% less vehicle solids. With high jetness carbon blacks, 20% higher pigment loading at 20% lower vehicle solids is possible. These mill bases can be let down into finished coatings or tinting pastes with a wide variety of conventional vehicles. For tinting pastes with maximum compatibility range, use Disperse-Ayd 8 as the let down vehicle. Solvent selection In tinting black dispersions, mineral spirits should be used to minimize floating. In masstone black mill bases, mineral spirits or xylene are the preferred solvents. Other solvents can be added after let down with additional vehicle solids. Disperse-Ayd Multifunctional Dispersing Agents do much more than simple surfactants. Whether used as additives or as the grinding vehicles for highly concentrated dispersions, they wet and deflocculate pigments without causing foaming or adversely affecting the film properties of your finished coating. No Dispersant Conventional Dispersant Dipserse-Ayd Simple stirring wets out pigment to get ready for milling. The right Disperse-Ayd Dispersant in your waterborne or high-performance, solventborne coatings will provide: Rapid pigment wetting Good flow at high pigment loading Increased mill output Maximum tinting strength development Full chroma development Elimination of floating, flooding and rub-up Compatibility in a broad range of coatings Long-term viscosity stability Optimum initial gloss and gloss retention Elimination of hard settling Combination wetting, dispersing and deflocculating agents for use with carbon black pigments in solventborne coatings.
