It reacts with either isocyanates or organic acids to form a variety of elastomers, such as polyurethanes, copolyesters and polyamides. Chiefly in polyurethanes Terathane ® functions as the the premium soft segment in numerous highly demanding applications. Polyurethane Hydrolysis resistance Microbe resistance Low-temperature resistance Very good dynamic properties : high resilience Low specific gravity Low viscosity abrasion The main uses for DuPont glycols involve the reaction of the hydroxyl groups with either organic acids or isocyanates. The glycols become segments or building blocks in a variety of elastomers, such as polyurethanes, copolyesters and polyamides. TERATHANE ® polyether glycols are readily soluble in alcohols, esters and ketones but they are insoluble in aliphatic hydrocarbons. TERATHANE® polyether glycols will also dissolve in aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons but are insoluble in water. These glycols are all hygroscopic. At room temperature TERATHANE ® can absorb up to 2% water, depending on the molecular weight. TERATHANE ® polyether glycols contain an oxidation inhibitor. After storage under nitrogen for one year at 70°C TERATHANE ® polyether glycols still meet production specifications. Polyurethane coatings: protective coatings, fabric and leather coatings, artificial leather, tank and pipe liners Terathane® polyether glycol, made only by DuPont, is a versatile building block for polymer formulators. In combination with other ingredients, it forms a wide variety of polyurethanes, polyesters and polyamide elastomers. The following listing gives an impression of the large end-uses range of Terathane® based products. Floor, roof, hovercraft blades, wire and cable, waterborne, fabric, aircraft, pipe, concrete and vinyl coatings Polytetramethylene ether glycol. Used in floor, protective, leather, roof, hovercraft blades, wire and cable, waterborne, fabric, aircraft, pipe, concrete and vinyl coatings. Provides hydrolysis, microbe, abrasion and low-temperature resistance. Offers very good dynamic properties such as high resilience, low specific gravity and low viscosity.
