Bayer Featured its Advanced Polyurethane Coatings & Sealants for Architectural Market at AIA 2012
- May 24, 2012
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- With more than 120 materials and technologies, Bayer MaterialScience LLC's building solutions make it easier for architects to meet their green building goals without sacrificing design aesthetics.
Bayer featured its broad portfolio of building materials and technologies during this year's American Institute of Architects (AIA) National Convention and Design Expo held in Washington, D.C.
Bayer's booth gave the attendees a firsthand look at such technologies as energy-efficient insulation; durable, aesthetically pleasing polycarbonate window glazing; pultruded polyurethane window lineals; advanced coatings and sealants; and materials for light emitting diodes (LEDs).
Attendees also got a chance to learn more about Bayer's transparent blast-resistant technology for high-visibility buildings, as well as its high-performance sustainable building network.
High-performance Window, Glazing and Roofing Systems
Bayer's Makrolon® polycarbonate sheet products provide the strength, energy efficiency and design freedom that architects want. Specifically, Bayer will highlight versatile window systems from Winco Windows developed for educational facilities. The windows, which feature Makrolon 15 and Makrolon multi UV polycarbonate sheet, are an alternative to fiberglass-faced daylighting products. The windows include a 15-year weathering warranty for exterior applications.
Also on display were Graham Architectural Products' GThurm high-efficiency windows. The window lineals, featuring G2RP® pultruded glass fibers reinforced with polyurethane from Bayer, offer improved dimensional stability, durability, thermal insulation and environmental friendliness over ordinary windows.
Additionally, Makrolon multi UV polycarbonate multiwall for roofing, featuring lightweight and high load-bearing capacity, were showcased.
Polyurethane Foam Insulation
Insulation is critical to reduce energy consumption, and Bayer featured its varied polyurethane insulation technologies for use in perimeter walls.
EcoBay™ spray polyurethane foam insulation - This Air Barrier Association of America (ABAA)-recognized material reduces energy consumption, lowers operating costs, prevents air leaks and provides continuous insulation for exterior applications without thermal bridging.
Rigid foam polyurethane insulation board - Bayer's rigid foam polyurethane insulation board is a market leader in low-slope roofing. It is rated for use in direct-to-steel decks and can be applied continuously in roof and wall applications.
Metal wall panel system from CENTRIA - Insulated wall panels are applied outside of steel studs to reduce thermal bridging and support moisture control. These panel systems offer a combination of superior performance, dynamic aesthetics and sustainable attributes.
Advanced-performance Coatings and Sealants
Bayer featured advanced-performance raw materials, including technologies for waterborne coatings and sealants that offer renewable content with ultra-low-to-zero volatile organic compound levels. Additionally, the company offers low-odor resins for an architectural high-durability (HD) wall coating technology ideal for healthcare and institutional facilities. The tough, easy-to-clean HD Technology provides extended service life in areas that are frequently disinfected/scrubbed with harsh chemicals.
Bayer offers a diverse portfolio of LED material solutions for architects and lighting designers as they make the switch to energy efficient, aesthetically pleasing and long-lasting LEDs. Of particular note is a new grade of thermally conductive Makrolon polycarbonate, as well as AURA UV infusion technology for protecting transparent polycarbonate against yellowing when it is used in exterior applications (e.g. lenses, covers, etc.). Other injection-molded materials for LED applications also offer high light transmission, molded-in reflectivity and diffusion technology.
Bayer also highlighted a polycarbonate light diffuser sheet for LED fixtures. This light diffuser sheet eliminates hotspots, provides luminance uniformity across the lens and high light transmission with higher impact strength than glass or acrylic for damage-prone areas.
Blast-resistant Structural Envelope
Protecting people and critical assets from an explosive attack is a high priority for security and building managers, especially for high-visibility buildings. Bayer's Hygard® BL80 Shock-Wave Sentinel is an advanced solution, establishing a new level of blast resistance. The patent-pending Hygard® BL80 can be integrated into the design of a structure, helping to protect most buildings and occupants from bomb attacks while preserving an open, attractive appearance. Shock-tube and open-range testing demonstrated the technology can withstand 80 psi peak pressure and 380 psi-msec impulse, approximately 30 percent above the most demanding requirement.
EcoCommercial Building Network
Attendees also had the opportunity to learn firsthand about the fast-growing EcoCommercial Building (ECB) Network, which now includes 16 organizations.
ECB brings together high-performing technologies that offer cost efficiency and reduced environmental impact. ECB helps building decision makers evaluate systems and cost performance in the early planning phase for low-energy and low-emission buildings, and provides a single point of access to make their goals a reality. Members are Acuity Brands, Bayer, Bostik, CBRE, CENTRIA, Deloitte LLP, Eaton Corporation, Graham Architectural Products, IDC Architects, Johnson Controls,Inc., Kingspan, Noveda Technologies and Winco Windows. ECB has also established alliances with organizations that execute building projects and study the next generation of sustainable design: Burns & Scalo Roofing, PJ Dick Incorporated and Sundt Construction.
