Evonik laboratory studies have shown that biotech methods can be used successfully to produce specialty chemicals from waste gas. For the first time, Evonik Industries has managed to use biotech methods to convert syngas to pure 2-hydroxyisobutyric acid (2-HIBA) under industrial conditions. 2-HIBA is a precursor used in the manufacture of PLEXIGLAS®. Waste gas is one example of a source of syngas.

Viracon announced an expanded product offering using its new RoomSide™ Low-E coating, which was introduced in an insulating dual pane configuration in March of 2013. Now, this new interior glass coating can be applied to laminated and insulating laminated products.

Global Bioenergies announces its decision to construct its second industrial pilot on the site of the Leuna refinery, close to Leipzig in Germany. This new pilot plant, to be supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) through a EUR 5.7 million grant, should include a 3 year study at the Fraunhofer Center for Chemical-Biotechnological Processes (CBP). The pre-commercial pilot is designed for an isobutene production capacity of up to 100 tons per year.
General Motors has given global approval for use of select clearcoats by PPG Industries' automotive refinish business for warranty repairs on its vehicles. Approved products include NEXA AUTOCOLOR® P190-6800 HS Express Clearcoat, ENVIROBASE® High-Performance EC800 Ultra Fast 2.1 Clearcoat and DELTRON® DC2000 Ultra Velocity Clearcoat. Each product underwent comprehensive testing to ensure it met GM's rigorous quality standards.

BASF has produced its first commercial volumes of 1,4-butanediol (BDO) from renewable raw material, and is offering this product to customers for testing and commercial use. The production process relies on a patented fermentation technology from Genomatica, based in California. The fermentation process uses dextrose as a renewable feedstock. The quality of BDO based on renewable raw material is comparable to petrochemical-based BDO.
Direvo Industrial Biotechnology GmbH (Direvo) announces the successful completion of laboratory
scale development of a fermentation process for low cost production of L-lactic acid, a part of its
BluCon® technology platform. The technology platform enables one-step conversion of nonfood
biomass to valuable chemicals, for example lactic acid.

Cabot Corporation recently announced that it has completed its acquisition of the equity stake owned by Grupo Kuo S.A.B. de C.V. (KUOB.MX) in its Mexican carbon black manufacturing joint venture, NHUMO, S.A.de C.V. The NHUMO business will be integrated into the company’s Reinforcement Materials Segment. Under the terms of the agreement, Cabot will pay $105 million, of which $80 million was paid upon closing.
Solvay announces it has agreed to acquire the specialty chemical assets of ERCA Química, Ltda. in Brazil. This will allow the Group to more than double its production capacity in surfactants in Brazil and to serve customers in the agrochemicals, home & personal care, coatings, mining and oil & gas markets.
As a key supplier of isocyanates, Vencorex is expanding its global capacity for Tolonate™ HDI derivatives by establishing a new production unit in Thailand. The new plant will be ready to serve the Asian market in 2015.
To demonstrate the practical benefits of polyaspartic coatings, Bayer MaterialScience LLC monitored the application of a two-part polyaspartic coating on an approximately 700-square-foot residential garage. Polyaspartic coatings can make a functional garage the talk of the neighborhood. While the neighbors' rubbernecking eventually subsides, the high performance and durability of polyaspartic coatings remain.
CVC Thermoset Specialties, a business group of Emerald Performance Materials, will increase capacity of its line of ERISYS™ epoxy-functional monomers, debottlenecking the reactor train used for production at its Maple Shade, N.J. facility. The project is slated for completion prior to the end of 2013.
PPG Industries' automotive refinish business has received approval from Ford Motor Company for use of PPG advanced clearcoat products for warranty repairs on all Ford vehicles. The approval was announced jointly by Kevin Loop, PPG OEM (original equipment manufacturer) business development manager, and Gerry Bonanni, Ford senior engineer, paint and body repair.
