Coating Film Defects - Prevention Through Understanding
|
In many cases film formation of coatings does not proceed in the way it is desired by the formulator and by the user of the system. A variety of phenomena govern the processes taking place during film formation. Often one of these phenomena results in a bad film being formed. Prevention and resolution of film defects in coatings costs a huge amount of time and money. Many companies rely on trial-and-error approaches in order to resolve problems that come up. Fortunately, solutions most often can be found in a quicker way and finding those solutions gives more satisfaction when the direction of resolution is based on logical grounds. By carefully inspecting a defect and by analysing the composition of the coating that is used one can argue what processes are expected to take place. When doing so it can be argued what the probable causes of defects are. As a logical next step measures can be taken in order to prevent or resolve the coating film defects.
