Offset Inks & Printing Processes: Reaching an Optimal Balance of Properties

A 90-min online short course by Jack Baarends
Offset Inks & Printing Processes: Reaching an Optimal Balance of Properties
Develop better balanced offset inks (flow, tack, piling, toning, drying, gloss…) by better understanding how properties interconnect together and by benefiting from Jack Baarends’ practical expertise.

The impact of your formulation choices on wet ink / ink on press / ink just printed / dry ink performance and how to solve / avoid typical issues encountered with off-set inks will be discussed in the light of day-to-day practice.
Course Type Formulation - Level Advanced
Why you should attend
  1. Optimize over 30 properties of offset inks and better predict their press behavior
  2. Get useful guidance to better deal with properties in contradiction, rheology...
  3. Troubleshoot faster (bad distribution, plate blinding, rub off...): know the causes & solutions and how the overall system will be impacted by your problem solving strategy
Who is it for?
  • Printing Ink manufacturers who want to learn to better predict how their ink will perform.
  • Printers who want to become more effective at troubleshooting
  • Suppliers to the Offset Ink and Printing industry willing to deepen their view on customers' needs and expectations.

The following sections will be covered during this session:

    1. Printing techniques and applications. The Lithographic process.

    2. Composition of an Offset ink. What is required ?

    3. Differences Sheetfed, Heatset, Coldset.

    4. How to make an Offset ink.

    5. Wet ink properties

    6. Viscosity, Yield value, Pseudo plasticity, Visco-elasticity, Tack and tack stability, Pigment wetting, Flow, Stay open, Overnight, (Non-)Skinning
Important parts are Rheology and physical properties.

    7. Press properties

    8. Transfer, Water balance, Misting / sling, Rheology / Press stability, Piling, Setting, Hold-out, After tack, Set off, Trapping, Scumming / Toning
Important parts are the properties in contradiction with each other and what to do about it.

    9. Properties of just printed ink.

    10. Dry ink Properties.

    11. Gloss, Density (color strength), Drying (oxidative), Dot sharpness, Film hardness, Adhesion,Resistance properties (Rub, Abrasion, Scratch)

    12. Troubleshooting of print errors.

    13. Control of the press chemistry
Roller does not accept ink, bad distribution
      Hanging back of ink
The ink is not properly transferred within the inking unit
Imposed inks are being inadequately laid down on the previous printed colors
      Insufficient trapping
      Too high dot gain
Choose the right viscosity of the ink
      Premature plate blinding
      “Hickies”
      Piling
      Insufficient drying
      Rub off
      Insufficient gloss
      Misting
      Tinting / Bleeding

At the end of the training there will be a Q&A Session where you can pose questions to Jack Baarends.

A transcript of all the questions and answers will be made available after the event.
With higher press speeds, lower paper quality through recycling and evolution of supports, optimizing ink formulations is constantly required. But with more than 30 properties to balance to fulfill needs at all stages of the off-set printing process, developing high quality off-set inks is everything but easy.

Join this course and benefit from Jack Baarends' 40+ year expertise in developing such systems. You will learn in particular to:
  • Adjust rheology for high speed printing presses
  • Balance properties in contradiction
  • Better predict performance on press
  • Troubleshoot issues commonly encountered in off-set printing

  • You will come away with a much deeper knowledge and understanding of how to successfully make and use offset inks, avoiding hours spent on trials and errors.
