Glass
transition temperature (Tg)
(extended definition)
Temperature point where a polymer experiences a significant change in properties. The
polymer structure turns to glassy and visco-elastic states.
Below Tg even segmental movement in polymer molecules is restricted, and polymers
become rigid and sometimes even brittle bodies. Above Tg polymers are rubber-like.
Gloss
(extended definition)
Sheen or ability of a surface to reflect light. Gloss is measured at a 60°
angle.
Gloss
control agent
Additive use to enhance or reduce gloss of a coating.
See Gloss

agent
Gloss
enhancer
Additive used in decorative and special paints to increase gloss.
Gloss retention
Ability of a coating application to retain the original sheen during weathering.
Grind
fineness
Degree of dispersion of a pigment suspension after dispersion
process. Grind fineness can be measured using a Hegman gauge.
Grinding
Dispersion process used to reduce the particle size of pigments and extenders, during which
agglomerates and aggregates are breaking.
