High performance pigments for deep black coatings

Higher Processing Efficiency

Higher processing efficiency To achieve the full color potential of a pigment, the pigment particles must be properly dispersed in the coating system.  Achieving optimal dispersion quality exposes the full surface area of the carbon black pigment and ensures the maximum absorption of visible light and consequently the best black color.

Cabot high color strength carbon black pigments:

Easy to disperse

Disperses easily

Selecting the proper type of Carbon Black for specific systems enables formulators to reduce dispersion time. Dispersing Carbon Black pigments in water-borne systems is especially difficult. That is why Cabot has developed a surface treatment technology specifically for water-borne systems. Ionic surface groups on the pigment enable a mechanism called electrostatic stabilization to occur, causing the pigment particles to automatically separate in water-borne systems. Grinding times are shortened, dispersion costs are minimized, and formulators can reduce dispersion time by more than 85% compared to the competitor benchmark.

Dispersion time of EMPEROR®

Highest level of dispersion stability

Achieves the highest level of dispersion stability

Achieving good color performance requires not only proper pigment dispersion but also maintaining dispersion quality until the coating is applied. Proper treatment of the pigment surface prevents re-agglomeration of the pigment particles, enabling long shelf lives for millbases, final formulations and ensuring consistent final film properties.

Requires minimal use of dispersion additives

Requires minimal use of dispersion additives

In deep black coatings, dispersing aids are essential to ensure that small particle size pigments are well dispersed throughout the coating system. By choosing the appropriate pigment, formulators can minimize the amount of dispersing aid required. In water-borne systems, Cabot's EMPEROR® products can reduce dispersing aid loadings by more than 50%.

The Optimal color achieved with low dispersant loading

Actual results will vary based on specific dispersing aid used

Solutions for VOC compliant H2O-borne and high solids systems

Solution to VOC concerns

The reduction of environmental impact is a major driver for coating technology. With this aim, water-based coating technology can enable low or no VOC coatings solutions. As formulators use water-borne technology to replace solvent-borne formulations, they seek to match or exceed their current performance levels. Cabot's EMPEROR® product family is designed specifically for water-based systems and provides formulators with high performance solutions for water-based systems. These products deliver high color performance and also high processing efficiency.
