Introduction
Corrosion is the destruction or degradation of metal by chemical attack. Pigments
can help prevent corrosion by:
- physically obstructing the passage of water and oxygen
- protecting the anodic sites that have become pitted
- providing soluble passifying ions to protect the metal
- producing an insoluble film to prevent active corrosion
The main corrosion-inhibiting pigments are:
Most of these pigments can be toxic because of lead or chrome VI they contain. They
have to be selected carefully depending on the application. Safety data sheets and
the technical information are very important.
