Free radical crosslinking / polymerization of unsaturated polyester or acrylate resins generally requires the use of accelerators. Traditional catalysts such as Dimethyl-p-toluidine (DMPT) or organometallic salts (cobalt, cadmium ...) are commonly used, however they show some limitations in several ways. To overcome these drawbacks, diethanol-p-toluidine (DEPT) , appears as a non yellowing solution for systems requiring a good control of polymerization and application at room and lower temperatures. If you are facing one or few of these issues, DEPT is the good choice!

Transparent and non yellowing material - No coloration problem with time
Accelerator should normally not impart a color to the product. More importantly the color should not change on aging. For DEPT, resistance to discoloration is primarily a function of the substituents on the aromatic ring.

Suitable for low and room temperature curing
Many coatings applications occur in environments where temperature cannot be easily controlled. Accordingly, it has become increasingly important to increase the cure rate of some polymer resins at low temperatures without detracting from the physical properties of the finally cured resins.
DEPT behaves as a polymerization accelerator, used either to speed the reaction rate at room temperature or to provide acceptable reaction rates at lower (e.g., outdoor) temperatures.

Moderate and control your polymerization rate
The faster cure rates may be undesirable because they generally result in excessive shrinkage on cure, high exotherms, and short shelf and pot lives. DEPT is a good candidate to moderate cure rate (compared to DMPT or other accelerators), which could be necessary in certain applications. As it is less reactive, exotherm may be less : DEPT would provide less shrinkage on cure and less interfacial stress.
