A non-labeled substance can be either an unstudied substance or a well-studied, safely proven one. DMSO is used in the pharmaceutical, agrochemical and coating industries for over 40
years and as such its toxicological profile has been fully evaluated.
Studies of acute and chronic toxicity show that DMSO is one of the least toxic solvent currently known. Its acute toxicity is for example much lower than ethanol.
