Sutherland Rub
Sutherland RubTest is used to determine the dry rub resistance of coatings &
inks.
Figure 1: Sutherland RubTest
A coated sample is placed in the Sutherland Rub Tester and a weight is mounted onto
the moving arm of the rub tester. Then a certain number of cycles are runned, and
the piece is rubbed by the weight. The results depend on the amount of ink or coating
ruboff from the test sample. The rub evaluation is qualitative:
- EXCELLENT - No ink or coating ruboff noted; graphics unblemished.
- VERY GOOD - Slight ink or coating ruboff noted; slight graphic damage.
- GOOD - Moderate ink or coating ruboff noted; slight graphic damage.
- POOR - Severe ink or coating ruboff noted; graphics blemished.
